SSB Interview: The 5 Stages Explained for First-Time Candidates

Clearing the written exam is only half the journey — the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview is a five-day process that assesses your personality, intelligence and Officer Like Qualities. Here is what each stage involves.

Day 1: Screening Test

The first day includes the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and the Picture Perception & Description Test (PPDT). Candidates who clear screening move ahead to the remaining four days; those who do not are sent home the same day, so this stage is a crucial filter.

Day 2: Psychological Tests

This includes the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT) and a Self Description test. These are designed to reveal your natural personality traits, since the time pressure leaves little room for rehearsed or artificial responses.

Days 3-4: Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks

GTO tasks include Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Task, Half Group Task, Individual Obstacles, Command Task, Snake Race and the Final Group Task. These outdoor tasks assess teamwork, planning ability, initiative and physical courage in a group setting.

Interview and Conference

A personal interview with the Interviewing Officer typically takes place across one of the middle days, covering your background, general knowledge, and reasoning ability. On the final day, the Conference brings all three assessors — the Psychologist, GTO and Interviewing Officer — together to decide the final recommendation.

Preparing for SSB

Since SSB assesses consistency of personality rather than memorised answers, the best preparation is building genuine Officer Like Qualities over time — through group activities, public speaking, physical fitness and honest self-awareness — rather than trying to fake responses on the day.
